Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has missed a lot of playing time during his career due to injuries, but he now faces a lawsuit that could cause him to miss time for a much more serious reason. A former girlfriend of Rose, who is known simply as “Jane Doe,” has sued Rose and two of friends, accusing them of drugging and raping her in August 2013. The woman is seeking unspecified damages for lost wages, mental anguish and emotional distress.
The suit alleges that Rose and his friends put something in the woman’s drink at a Beverly Hills home where the Bulls player was staying. After she started to become incapacitated, a friend who was with the woman became worried and put her in a cab to go home. The next morning, according to the complaint, Rose and the other defendants entered the woman’s apartment through an unlocked door and took turns raping her. According to the lawsuit, she did not go to the police at the time because she was “ashamed and embarrassed” by what had happened to her.
A representative for Rose calls the allegations “completely false and without any factual basis” and says the lawsuit is “a desperate attempt to shake down a highly respected and successful athlete.” The Bulls issued a statement saying it would be inappropriate for the team to comment on the situation at this point as team officials are still obtaining information about the lawsuit after just learning about it.
