M.I.A. Working With Skrillex On Upcoming Album “Matahdatah”

M.I.A.

M.I.A. has only released one song from her follow up project to 2013’s Matangi, called “Swords.” Some new M.I.A. music would definitely be cool right about now. M.I.A. has since become known for her rare instruments, electronics and unusual sound samples. Critics have acclaimed a distinctive style to her music. Lyrically incorporating a range of political, social, philosophical and cultural references. All things that have defied existing pop music conventions. M.I.A.’s music features styles such as electro, reggae, rhythm and blues, alternative rock, hip hop, grime, rap ballads and Asian folk.

Well, she recently revealed one of the exciting musical collaborators who is also working on Matahdatah, her new album, on Instagram. American electronic producer Skrillex can be seen sitting all comfy on a bed and hunched over a MacBook. In addition to Skrillex, Baltimore artist-producer and previous M.I.A. collaborator Blaqstarr also seems to be hard at work on his laptop in the picture as well.

M.I.A. has said of the upcoming project, “The concept for this LP is ‘broader then a border’ and Matadatah is the journal of Matangi. Sometimes I move vertical and sometimes I move horizontal.” There doesn’t seem to be a firm release date for the album and there’s not a whole lot of details available about it in general. Other than that it will be a conceptual extension of and exploratory follow up to Matangi.

Matangi received generally positive reviews from music critics. In its first week of release, the album sold 15,000 copies and peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200, falling to number 90 in its second week. Overall, Matangi is M.I.A.’s lowest charting album worldwide.
