Melanie Martinez - "Cry Baby" (Album Review)

Melanie Martinez just released one of the most anticipated albums of the year, Cry Baby. If you haven’t heard of her you will soon be seeing her everywhere. She is the anti-pop tart with a spooky sound, amazing voice, and a new album that is almost perfect. She first found fame on The Voice and blew the crowd away with her smoky voice and adorable look. She signed with Atlantic Records and began releasing singles including the hits “Carousel”, “Dollhouse”, “Soap”, and “Pity Party”.  This album gives you each of those hits plus 12 new radio ready tracks.

Melanie fills in a gap in the pop world. We have a lot of monotone girls crying about lost love, hard moments, and trying to make us believe they are living a life they so clearly are not. This young woman speaks the truth in a way that is entertaining and refreshingly honest. A great example of this is “Mrs. Potato Head”. Though at first glance this track is just quirky, you will soon realize just how impeccable it is. Melanie discusses the pressures on young women to be perfect without having to flat out say it. She speaks from an innocent point of view and puts you in the mindset of a young girl looking for the answer in her toys.

“If you want a little more confidence

Potatoes turn to french fries, yeah it’s common sense

All you need’s a couple more condiments

And a hundred thousand dollars for some compliments”

Lyrically, this album is spot on 99.9% of the time. It stays true to her sound, message, and brand without shoving nonsense down your throat. I would have appreciated a few more stand out tracks however she has a way of presenting common song themes in such a clever way you are never bored. It is an impressive quality that pushes her past every pop artist out right now. Listen to the album below and let us know what you think!
