Miles Teller, I never thought I would be so taken aback by a performance from you. I finally got to see Whiplash. Twice. And I could not believe how much I loved it, it just absolutely blew me the
A young and talented drummer attending a prestigious music academy finds himself under the wing of the most respected professor at the school, one who does not hold back on abuse towards his students. The two form an odd relationship as the student tries to achieve greatness, and the professor tries to stop him. And since the Academy Awards are right around the corner, I thought it necessary to review this film.
From the opening scene, we’re introduced to Andrew who is a fantastic drummer, seeking approval from his ruthless, violent music teacher. And the way that the story unfolds from there on out, is amazing.
J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller give incredible performances, specifically J.K. Simmons (who is nominated for on Oscar for this). He is
fucking sensational, and hysterical. You cannot take your eyes off of him. Watch the clip below if you don’t believe me.
Yeah. He lost weight and delivered the finest cinematic performance of his career.
This film is able to blend this great jazz music with the composition of the camera and the cinematic energy it creates is magical. This is from a first time director, Damien Chazelle, who also wrote the script, completely blew my mind with his directorial debut. He killed it. I absolutely love this movie. After the credits went up, I had to immediately watch it again, and I did. From the dialogue, to the cinematography, the camera work, the performances, the editing, everything was just damn near perfect.
I cannot honestly think of a single thing I did not like. And I love that this movie is all about character. It is about these two obsessed characters, the teacher and the student, in this duel with one another. A beautiful character study, of two beautifully flawed characters. J.K. should be taking home that Academy Award. This is a movie about jazz, and this was easily among the top three of 2014 for me, and one of the most adrenaline fueled films that came out last year. It doesn’t waste any time, it gets started and does not let up – it is relentless. And it’s amazing.
It didn’t open in wide release. Very limited release. So a lot of people have not seen it. If you can, please go watch this masterpiece. I really do think it is a masterpiece, it is that great. I had to run out and go buy the soundtrack, never have I been so fascinated with jazz then I am now. And I’ve always liked jazz. You literally see Andrew bleed several times on his drums, and his physical performance is so thrilling and mesmerizing. The only thing he cares about is being the best. The movie brings up some very interesting points, about dedication and talent, and how we reward mediocre effort.
And the last 15 minutes…is something I have not really seen before in a film, ever. It is unreal what these guys were able to accomplish. That was one of the most exciting, fulfilling third acts I have ever seen in my life. Please go see Whiplash, I don’t even know if it is still playing anywhere. It’s a shame Miles Teller was not nominated for anything big, I would’ve liked to have seen that happen.
