It was just 2-years ago today when the hip-hop world was shocked with the sudden loss of one of its most loved and respected elder statesmen, the over weight lover known as Heavy D.
Heavy D first exploded on the scene in 1986 with his smash “Mr. Big Stuff” and was an instant success story. Known as the “over weight lover” due to his size and carisma, Hev became hip-hops first stout sex symbol, setting the mold for other rotund hip-hop artists such as Notorious B.I.G. and others.
With hits like “The Over Weight Lover”, “Love Me For Me”, “We Got Our Own Thing”, “Now That We Found Love” and many more, Heavy D was the artist that made Uptown Records what it was at the time. The label was basically built around him. Even Diddy will admit that if it wasn’t for Heavy D, he may have never became who he is in the industry. There was no other hip-hop artist of large stature that was able to do the things that Heavy D did. What other hip-hop atists of that size was able to rap, dance and attract the ladies like Heavy D? Heavy was also a highly respected lyricist.
Heavy D’s musical style broke bounderies and color lines as well as ended the stigma that a fat rapper could never be a sex symbol. Hev also transitioned his career into movies, television and many other areas in the entertainment business. Heavy D was highly respected and admired by many in the industry as well as being the calalyst that springboarded the careers of artists/producers such as Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Soul 4 Real, and various others. If you ask anyone in the industry about Heavy D, I can just about guarantee no-one will have anything bad to say about him whether personally or musically. Hev’s last performance was at the 2011 Hip-Hop BET Awards and just a few weeks later the world was shocked by the news of his loss.
Heavy D will forever be loved by the hip-hop community and will always be remembered. Fly In Paradise Heavy D.
