Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Steven A. Clark grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is now a Miami-based R&B singer signed with Secretly Canadian. Now, he’s finally lined up his first album for the label, called The Lonely Roller, and it will be out on September 18. In this video for “Can’t Have You,” you’ll see Clark making his way through shadowy corridors, city streets and in underground parking lots, talking about trying to move on after the end of a relationship.
Director Chris Black recalls, “I discovered Steven’s music about a year ago while driving home. A radio station in LA, KCRW, was playing ‘Just Ride.’ The sound of Steven’s voice and music was just so cool and smooth; I thought, this is who I want to work with! A year later, Secretly Canadian sent me the track and I flipped over how good it was; a proper track to introduce Steven to the world.
Listening to Steven’s music, and even when we were shooting with him, you can feel that he’s emotionally invested in his music which makes it easy when shooting videos. We felt we had a responsibility to create a video that does justice to the emotions and feelings that Steven is drawing from in ‘Can’t Have.‘ My DP, Dustin Lane, and I both agree that Steven is without a doubt, a star,” says Black.
