It’s still happening. Baltimore County police killed an unarmed black man after they were called to an Owings Mill, Md., home while responding to a domestic disturbance. They thought he had a gun.
According to the Huffington Post, Spencer Lee McCain, 41, was in a “defensive stance”, as we are told, when he was shot and killed by police around 1 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Baltimore cops. Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson attended a news conference and stated that the 3 officers involved all opened fired on Spencer because they believed he had a weapon. No weapon was found at the scene. This excuse is getting old, folks.
Johnson said that although police found 19 casings at the scene, it was unclear how many times McCain had actually been hit, HP reports. The woman living at the residence with her 2 children had already taken out a protective order against Spencer Lee McCain and claimed to police that he had threatened to beat her on several occasions.
One of the officers arrived on the scene first and he heard screams coming from the woman’s apartment, so he called for backup, HP reports. Once Spencer’s fatal encounter with police took place, the woman, who is reported to have had several cuts and bruises, told investigators that Spencer Lee McCain specifically told her, “You’re going to get the beating you deserve,” according to the news report.
Apparently, about “16 to 20 domestic violence calls had been made to that home address.” Johnson added that all 3 officers, 2 of whom are white, one is black, have been placed on administrative leave.
