X-Men TV Series Can Happen…But Marvel Studios Has To Approve

Fox CEO Dana Walden was talking at the Television Critics Association press tour earlier today, and Dana confirmed that all that talk about a potential X-Men TV series being in the works is actually true. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Being able to see the Mutants on a weekly basis? Well, it will only go through if Marvel allows it. Oh, boy…

Marvel Studios does not own the movie rights to the X-Men franchise, however they do still own the comicbook rights, and they have final say as to whether or not Fox can move forward with a television series based around the X-Men. Walden said to the Hollywood Reporter earlier today, “For X-Men, we’re in negotiations with Marvel. We’re hopeful we’ll be able to announce something soon. We’re not closed on a deal yet but it’s something we’re definitely pursuing.”

They’ve already got the writers for this TV series. Apparently two of the guys involved with Star Trek Beyond are involved in this project, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. Evan Katz and Manny Coto are going to be the showrunners and re being credited as its creators. “The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature side, so we won’t be including Marvel characters that are at ABC with Disney,” Walden confirmed.

So, we won’t be seeing Daredevil or Jessica Jones, or even the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. teaming up with the Mutants. “This will be exclusively the franchise as it has existed at Fox.”

OKay. So no joining of the two studios, like Marvel-Sony are doing with Spider-Man. But what is Marvel getting out of this deal? They could just be nice and just give it to ’em. But…they also could ask for something in return. Asking that the show not air on the same nights as S.H.I.E.L.D. would be a smart bet, sure. But what if they ask to reclaim the movie rights to Fantastic Four? Is that even a possibility?

Or how about just Silver Surfer? Because they sure could use him in the MCU right now, with this very specific direction they’re going in…

Or they could just ask for a big, fat ass check.

bitch better have my money rihanna
